Potato Salad Kickstarter Beats Funding Goal By Over 500,000 Per Cent

Remember Zack Danger Brown’s hilarious potato salad Kickstarter? It just ended with more than $US55000 in funding on a $US10 goal. Now Danger (as we call him) says he’ll actually do something productive with all that money.

This guy is a hero. I mean, just check out this “behind the scenes” video posted to the potato salad Kickstarter page a few days ago. In this job, I watch a lot of smarmy-arse crowdfunding pitch videos and Danger’s send-up is just absolutely perfect.

So now that Danger has a cool 50 stacks of potato cash in his pocket, what’s he going to do? Refreshingly, he’s going to put it to some good use. Danger is hosting PotatoStock in Columbus, Ohio, on 27 September — a free festival with concessions proceeds going to fight hunger and homelessness in central Ohio.

And there’s more:

We are going to contribute a significant portion of the remaining money to the fund at the Columbus Foundation. This will create a permanent fund to help Central Ohio’s non-profits end hunger and homelessness. These types of funds gain interest every year and grow over time, so, while our little internet joke will one day be forgotten, the impact will be felt forever.

We believe that humour plays a big role in making the world a better place. We plan to use some of the profit from this campaign to start an LLC, pay web hosting and buy / rent production equipment to continue making content. Our LLC will be a for-profit venture and its goal will be to spread humour and joy around the world.

The potato salad Kickstarter was a brilliant piece of satire, an artful jab at the self-important and seriously wacko land of no-accountability crowdfunding. That Danger plans to make some good come of it is almost enough to restore our faith in the crowdfunding model. Not to mention, give us a serious hankering for some picnic food.
