We’ve gotten a peek at some of the other structures being built for the food-themed Milan Expo 2015, from a smog-gobbling facade for Italy to a veggie-growing restaurant for France. Now here’s the American pavilion, which is inspired by three signature food-related structures for the US: A barn, a boardwalk and — of course! — food trucks.

Designed by Biber Architects, the US pavilion is named “American Food 2.0: United to Feed the Planet” and will explore food production, sustainable farming methods, health and nutrition. Rainwater harvesting as well as hydroponic methods will be used to grow food on the structure’s exterior and solar panels on the roof will power the entire building.

The barn-like structure is designed to evoke a rustic, pastoral vision of the US, but with breezy, perforated walls and an utterly contemporary vibe. Visitors will enter using a boardwalk — made from beams recycled from other American boardwalks — which will wind up and through the space.

And of course it wouldn’t be America without food trucks, which will be clustered around the outside of the structure. No word yet if these will be Italian outposts of some of our more famous American exports — How about some Kogi tacos, or the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck? — but here’s to hoping that the organisers are able to deliver an authentic street food experience.

147 countries are participating in the Milan Expo 2015, which has just started to break ground. The exhibition will be open next May. [Milan Expo 2015]
