North Korea Launched A Bizarre New Cooking Website ‘For Housewives’

Refusing to let little things like a lack of widespread internet/food access get in its way, everyone’s favourite warmongering-dictatorship-that-could has just launched its very own cooking website. Say hello to North Korea’s uncanny online food valley.

The Korean Association of Cooks website had actually been announced several times over the past few years, but no one had actually seen it until today. According to North Korea’s state-run news agency:

The homepage deals with common knowledge and theories on variety of dishes and how to cook them.

It has a distinctive catalogue for serving housewives’ convenience. When a visitor chooses any food material in the catalogue, she can get detailed information about lists of dishes prepared with it and their cookery.

While the site has presumably been available on the country’s highly restricted intranet, it’s hard to imagine its gotten much use in a country where 1 in 4 children suffer from chronic hunger and malnutrition.

Still, the country’s (few) residents with internet access can at least live vicariously through the website, which offers extensive descriptions of the culture and mythos surrounding North Korea’s many delicacies. For instance, and as told by Google Translate:

And apparently, “the website was awarded the certificate of best software products at the 23rd National Software Contest and Exhibition.” Which, admittedly, is not too difficult when your competition does not exist, but hey — a win is a win.

We highly encourage you to peruse the website on your own. From the photos of empty restaurants to tips its residents will never see, North Korea’s bizarre delusions are out in full form. [The Guardian]
