A MagSafe Charger For The iPhone Would Be Awesome

MagSafe is really wonderful tech, the MacBook’s most underrated feature. Wouldn’t it be great on the iPhone too? That’s what the Kickstarter for a charger and battery pack called “Cabin” is shooting for. And even if it never actually happens, it’s a nice fantasy.

Cabin won’t upgrade your iPhone to change its charging port or anything (duh). Instead, it would provide you with a little Lightning-port plug that has a magnetic MagSafe-esque connector on the far side, which you can use easily snap the phone into the Cabin battery pack or dock.

MagSafe-esque, because the magnetic snap-in functionality is where the similarities begin and end. While there are plans for a little Lighting cable adaptor that make it look and function like a mini MagSafe cable, this wouldn’t let you charge your phone with your laptop cable or anything because it’s not the same kind of power.

As cool as this idea is, it’s also only a Kickstarter, so there’s no guarantee it will ever exist. Especially in this case, where the folks behind it readily admit they still have a bunch of security certifications and licensing business to take care of before they could ever dream of mass producing these things. And if that falls through then WOMP WOMP.

Still, it’s a fascinating little idea; snapping a charger in with magnets is never not wonderful. And since Apple just went through all the trouble of introducing Lighting ports, there’s little chance anything like this could happen through official Apple channels. But hey, it’s nice to dream.
