iPad Split-Screen Multitasking Might Work Like This

Ahead of iOS 8’s launch, there were tantalising rumours that the iPad would get split-screen multitasking. They were roundly ignored by Apple, but developers have found code that hints at its presence — and here’s how it might work.

This GIF and video, below, have been put together by Steve Troughton-Smith after playing around in the iOS 8 iPad Simulator. He’s managed to enable some of those rumoured split screen skills, using a two-finger swipe to the side to activate them. The results show Safari being resized to fill 75, 50 and 25 per cent of the screen. In fact, filling just a quarter, it looks a lot like the iPhone running the same software.

It looks pretty great and isn’t hard to imagine using to, say, read a web page while composing an email. Remember, though, that it is based on some guess work, as well as the aforementioned code, and we’re yet to see what two apps running side-by-side might look like. Indeed, given Apple completely ignored the new feature it may not even see the light of day just yet. We’ll have to wait and see. [@stroughtonsmith via 9to5Mac via Engadget]
