An Augmented Reality Mirror Lets You Test Makeup Without Putting It On

Thanks to this slick augmented reality mirror, if you happen to find yourself in Sephora’s makeup store while visiting Milan, Italy, you’ll have the rare opportunity to try on almost every shade of eyeshadow the company sells, without ever putting any of it on your face.

The mirror was created by a company called ModiFace, and using real-time facial tracking and 3D, it’s able to accurate tint a person’s eyelids to any shade, at any angle, or even while their face is moving around. So the result is just like a real mirror; no need to carefully position yourself correctly or anything.

The system can presumably also work with lipstick and other makeup since it’s basically performing a real-time masked colour correction on the live video feed. And while it’s only available in one Sephora location at this time, it’s assumed that if this trial goes well the displays will be rolled out in other stores in the near future.
