These Folding Chairs Are Beautifully Practical

The folding chair is a very practical — if occasionally uncomfortable — piece of furniture, but it can be hard to store with style. Not any longer though, thanks to this Hanger Chair.

Admittedly, this isn’t the first folding chair to hang, but the examples we’ve seen in the past have been towards the more… practical end of the spectrum. In contrast, Philippe Malouin’s effort is simple and effortlessly.

It was first designed way back in 2008 as part of a series of space saving objects that also included an inflatable dining table, but has now been put into manufacture by Canadian design brand Umbra. Designed by Malouin while studying at Design Academy Eindhoven, he explains the thinking behind the piece:

“Folding chairs tend to lie around the house, stacked in a corner, or in an unused room. When space is an issue, as is the case for most city dwellers, an object such as a folding chair will clutter up the precious available space.

“The Hanger Chair is a folding chair based on one of the ultimate storage systems: the modest hanger. By morphing the function of the hanger with that of the folding chair, a new hybrid is born: a Hanger Chair — that has a function, even when not in use, to store our clothes in an orderly fashion.”

The Hanger Chair is being unveiled by Umbra at this week’s New York ICFF exhibition. Currently, there’s no word on pricing or availability, but it should be available from the company’s website soon. [Umbra via Dezeen]
