Bloomberg: Samsung Galaxy S5 Due April, Maybe With Eye-Scan Security

If you’re holding out for the next Android superphone, you may only have a few months to wait. Samsung has spoken out about its upcoming devices in a long interview with Bloomberg, and it plans to have the S5 out by April.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, took the opportunity to outline the company’s plans. Firstly, he explained when we can expect the S5:

“We’ve been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time. When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved.”

In terms of features, he hinted that the phone may include “iris recognition technology”, presumably as a retort to Apple’s fingerprint identification system. Elsewhere, though, it sounds like Sammy will make an effort to make the handset feel a little more premium too. He explained:

“When we moved to S4 from S3, it’s partly true that consumers couldn’t really feel much difference between the two products from the physical perspective, so the market reaction wasn’t as big. For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it’s about the display and the feel of the cover.”

Bloomberg rounds out its feature by reminding readers of Samsung’s supposed three-sided phone screen — though that’s purely speculative. The take home? The S5 will probably be here in April, and it might be quite good. [Bloomberg]
