We Still Have Time To Destroy Ourselves Before The Future Comes

According to Carl Sagan, the only thing that can stop us from reaching the stars is a) a global extinction event or b) nuclear self-destruction. I thought B was out of the question already but, according to the Wall Street Journal, perhaps we aren’t there yet. The news is that Russia has deployed SS-26 Stone mobile nuclear missile platforms — pictured in the photo — extremely close to Europe, on the Baltic Sea, near Poland and Lithuania.

Talking to the WSJ, deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said that the US has “shared with Russia the concerns that countries in the neighbourhood have… regarding Russia’s deployment of the Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad.” They have urged Moscow to “take no steps to destabilize the region.”

Defence Tech reports that Russia doesn’t give a damn about what the US is saying. Talking to the Russian newspaper Izvestia, the deputy head of the State Duma’s defence committee Viktor Zavarzin said that “NATO has American tactical nuclear weapons in Europe. Who can it be aimed against if not Iran? Only against us.”

Keep up protesting, Ukraine.
