In 2014, Amazon is planning more original content like Alpha House, Betas, Annebots, Creative Galaxy, and Tumbleleaf. While being in Australia complicates access to these shows, what’s interesting is that all of it is going to be shot in 4K. So many pixels (if you have an ultra high-def TV, that is).
While many movies and some shows are already shot in 4K, Amazon actually plans to deliver 4K content. It has already produced five comedy series — Alpha House, Betas, Annebots, Creative Galaxy, and Tumbleleaf — and there are five drama series on the way as well. These include Bosch, Mozart in the Jungle, The After, The Rebels, and Transparent, all of which are getting the 4K treatment in the new year. So while this might not technically matter since most people don’t actually own 4K sets or DVD players at this point, at least you have the option.
It is interesting to see Amazon — rather than a major content provider — leading the 4K charge. Especially because these series, by definition, are made to be streamed, and because UHD stuff requires a whole lot more bandwidth than your normal HD shows. Then again, it also makes sense in that people are streaming now more than ever, and why wouldn’t Amazon give us more of a reason to do everything and watch everything on Amazon? [Amazon]
