Telstra Offering Free Calls To The Philippines During Typhoon Crisis

Super-Typhoon Haiyan has torn through the Philippines in the last few days. In one area alone, up to 10,000 people are feared dead. If you have family in the area and are on Telstra, you’ll be able to call or text them free of charge.

Telstra will offer its customers free standard voice calls and SMS messages to the Philippines from 6am yesterday through to 6am on Monday 25 November. That applies to calls and texts from either fixed line phones or mobile services made by retail customers. ALl credits will be applied to the next bill.

We’re still waiting to hear back from Optus and Vodafone as to whether they’ll add this offer. We will update you when we hear back, as we expect to.

You can donate to the relief effort being run by the Philippines Red Cross here. Just select the HAIYAN option in the dropdown box and indicate how much you wish to donate.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has set up a crisis hotline for those looking for family members in the area. You can call on 1300 555 135.
