MoMA Will Banish Grotty Audio Guides With Free Guide App

Smart: MoMA has announced the launch of an audio guide platform that will be accessible on Android or iOS devices for free.

The museum’s new Audio+ platform will offer up all the usual stuff — audio guides, maps, and information — along with an in-app camera that lets you shoot your favourite pieces and save your route for reference later on. So far, it’s been a hit — almost 700,000 images have already been shot by Audio+ users inside of MoMa since the app’s testing phase began in July.

Right now, the Mayor Bloomberg-funded platform is available to rent on iPod Touches at the museum. But soon, the app will launch as part of MoMA’s existing app, making it accessible to visitors and far-away gawkers alike.

Let’s hope other museums take its lead and end the reign of the grubby, $20 handheld audio guide.
