Back once again with a brand new prize: this time you’re playing for the awesome Nokia Lumia 1020: the best Lumia yet.
The Nokia Lumia 1020 is a mobile photographer’s dream.
The 1020 packs a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 4G capabilities and a 4.5-inch 1280×768 screen with 332 ppi. It’s a gorgeous device, but the real party piece comes when you turn the phone around.
There, you’ll find a 41-megapixel PureView camera: technology we thought could only belong in a lab, let alone on a phone you can slip easily into your pocket. The camera is the 1020′s main event, and boy is it quite a trick.

This Week’s Challenge: Macro And Zoom
Everyone owns a camera these days, but how well do you use it? It’s more than just point and shoot, ya know.
Macro photography is the art of close-up photography. Beautiful focus at close range to expose the intricate detail, beauty and soul of the subject. That’s what we want from you this week: macros and close-ups.
The Nokia Lumia 1020 has a great zoom which allows you to get closer than ever. That’s your mission: to get closer to your subject and show us something beautiful. Last week’s challenge was about exposing the beauty of the vast universe, now we want you to find beauty in the tiniest of details.
Look closely at the things around you and think of how beautiful you can make an image if you really got close. The stems of a leaf, the detail of the human eye, the beauty inherent in focussing in on one grain of sand amongst the billions.
You can use your DSLR, smartphone, point-and-shoot — whatever provides EXIF info on your photo.
So be sure your EXIF data is visible before uploading otherwise we can’t accept the entry!
How Judging Works
- Over three weeks, we will hold three rounds — one per week. There will be one Nokia Lumia 1020 prize pack up for grabs over the three weeks.
- This time, we’re back to READER VOTING for the best entry! Submit your images and the Gizmodo readers will vote for their favourites and three finalists will go head to head for the admiration of their Editors.
- Entries for the Shooting Challenge — Macro and Zoom will close at 10am AEST on Tuesday 8 October.
- The “Macro And Zoom Shots” round nominee will be announced 10am AEST on Tuesday 15 October after one week of voting.
The Rules
- We have altered the terms and conditions [PDF] for the Shooting Challenge. Linking friends from your social networks to the Gizmodo voting page is encouraged, however, the use of vote farming sites is against the rules and those caught will be disqualified. Please be respectful and constructive if leaving a comment about a photo.
- The work must be your own.
- Photos need to be taken the week of the contest (October 1-October 7). No portfolio shots please.
- EXIF info must be visible to us — check for it before you submit! Photo won’t be accepted without valid EXIF data.
- Explain (briefly) the photography equipment, settings, technique and story behind the shot.
- Include your shooting summary (camera, lens, ISO, etc) in the body of the email along with a story of the shot in a few sentences.
- Entries must be submitted via the entry form below.
- Don’t forget to name your image attachment properly!
- Save your files as JPGs, and use a FirstnameLastnameMacroZoom.jpg naming convention.
- Please ensure your image is at least 800px wide and no larger than 3MB.
- One submission per person.
- Don’t skip the story part because it’s often the most enjoyable part for us all beyond the great photos!
