Even when an app is technically functional on both phone and tablets, it’s hard to deny the fact that some of them just look so much better in big, beautiful form.
Ping: Instead of swiping and sliding emails into categories to be read later or archived, Pings takes a wholly different approach. Here, email conversations are separated by the individual contact, much in the same way your text messages are organised. If you get emails from someone not in your contacts — usually a business or newsletter — they end up on an entirely different page thats jus ta swipe away and all grouped together. You can currently use Ping with Gmail, AOL, Yahoo!, and iCloud accounts. Plus, if both people in the conversation use Ping, the thread gets some iMessage-like boosts such as quicker response times and an indication of when the other person is typing. Ping will be available in the App Store starting September 18, and you can sign up to reserve your spot now over at Ping’s website. [TBD]
Path: This week, Path introduced a premium, pay-for service. Path 3.2 for Android and iOS now allows users unlimited access to the network’s stickers, camera filters and all manner of other things for a monthly or annual fee. Subscriptions for iOS sell for $US5 for three months and $US15 for a year. It’ll help Path generate revenue, and in return offer users more features — stickers! photo filters! — and a more customisable experience, according to Path. Though we’re yet to find out exactly what that means. But it raises the question: are you prepared to start paying for a social network? [Free, $US5/3 months, $US15/year]
Spotify Connect: Spotify Connect allows you to seamlessly pull music playback from one device to another. In its most basic use case, it’s just a simple way to transfer your streaming music session between devices that are running Spotify. Beyond devices actually running Spotify, you’ll be able to transfer playback to compatible speaker products. Spotify Connect is launching with a bunch of brands on board: Argon, Bang & Olufsen, Denon, Marantz, Philips, Pioneer, Revo, Teufel and Yamaha. It’ll all come with the Spotify branding below, and you can expect to see hardware as early as October. Spotify says the app update should roll out across platforms before then in the order of iOS, Android, desktop, and then browser.
