North Korea and the internet are just starting to get along, and the relationship is a little bit tense. DPRK does have Android tablets though! And rest assured they are very strange.
A tourist known only as “Michael” picked up the tablet — a Samjiyon — when he was visiting the country and spilled all the strange details to North Korea Tech. It’s got an antenna, for instance, and perplexing comes with Angry Birds Rio built-in. Meanwhile Wi-Fi is nowhere to be found and the default browser comes set up to shunt you right into the North Korean intranet. Also if you’re up for some definitely-not-at-all-State-sponsored reading, it comes with “Juche Study Books” so you can brush up on your Kim Il-sung ideology. And, of course, there’s no Google software in sight.
Spec-wise it’s got a 1.2GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 1024×768 resolution on its 7-inch screen, 8GB or 16GB of on-board storage, and comes with Android 4.04 Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s no Nexus 7, but it’s not utter trash or anything. All for around $200.
North Korea has mentioned the possibility of having some tablet computers around, but this is the first we’ve seen one in the wild, and man is it bizarre.
