And the new Doctor is…

Peter Capaldi!

This morning at 4am Australian-time, the BBC held a live unveiling of the actor tapped to take over from 11th Doctor Matt Smith in the role of the universe’s last Time Lord.

So how do you know Peter Capaldi? Most famously you’ll recognise him from his time as Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It, but Whovians would better recognise him from a stint on Doctor Who spin-off show, Torchwood, as John Frobisher in the Children of Earth storyline.

Interestingly, you may have recently seen him in World War Z with a very telling character name:

Capaldi said in the live unveiling that it was difficult for him to keep the secret of his biggest role yet from friends and family.

“Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”

“It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer, but it’s been so fantastic,” he said this morning.

We still have two episodes with Matt Smith as the Doctor: the 50th Anniversary special which will also star former Assistant Billie Piper and her former Doctor David Tennant, and the annual Christmas Special in which the Doctor will regenerate into his 13th iteration.
