Look at the text message conversation between any two people in the 12 to late 20s age range and there’s a pretty decent chance you’ll get a deluge of brightly coloured cartoon icons that, just a few years ago, would have seemed entirely nonsensical. Now they can tell entire tales. Yes, Emojis have taken over, and rather than fight it, Emojify offers you just one more way to incorporate the language replacement into your life — gilding your very own photos in emoji gold.
What does it do?
Turns actual photos into emoji art. Upon opening the app, you’re prompted to either snap a new photo or choose one from your album, once you have a picture ready, you get to adjust the size of the emoji’s that make it up as well as the contrast levels. A best practices tip: make sure you’re using a solid, clearly outlined image on a (preferably) light background. You can then go on to share away, and they even allow for photos up to 16 megapixels — perfect for printing your posters full of smiley faces, snowmen, hypodermic needles, and poop.
Why do we like it?
Admittedly, one of the major reasons this particular little guy got our attention is that it’s not another goddamn filter app. Second, it actually is a pretty fun little trick. Everyone’s familiar with the photo collage’s built from other photos, and Emojify is a fun, modern take on that practice that’s super easy and puts out some pretty decent images, assuming you use the right source photo. The app’s website offers some iconic examples of what these emojis can do when they put their mind to it, but have fun messing around with different shots and seeing what you can come up with.
