Kogan Launches Full HD Go Pro Rival For $119

Kogan Technologies is trotting out a range of budget action cams in a bid to undercut market leader Go Pro (which Kogan also sells). The Kogan Full HD Action Cameras are waterproof, shock-proof and come with colour LCD displays. A range of accessories, including a handlebar mount, helmet mount, car suction mount, surfboard mount and tripod mount have also been released for the product.

If the online vendor is to be believed, the Kogan Full HD Action Camera Silver Edition has “near identical” specifications to GoPro Cameras, including 1080p video recording, a 12-megapixel sensor and a 170 degree field of view.

Of course, it’s easy to match specs on paper but the quality of the components also plays a significant part — for example, one of Kogan’s HD camcorders boasted it could take 20-megapixel still images, but the results were barely good enough for Facebook. We also have reservations about how badly the 1.5in LCD display may affect the 1000mAh battery’s life.

On the plus side, the unit is waterproof to depths of 30 metres, shockproof to falls of up to two metres and completely dust-proof. The availability of the aforementioned accessories is also compelling (you could purchase an entire action movie-making kit for less money than a standalone Go Pro camera). Kogan is also selling a Black Edition, which comes with the bike mount, helmet mount and car suction cup mount for an additional $20.

Naturally, it all comes down to the video quality — if this thing is capable of taking decent footage Go Pro could have a real contender on its hands. You can find out more about the product at Kogan’s website.
