Early Benchmarks Show The New Nexus 7 Is Blazing Fast

The first batch of new Nexus 7s are in the hands of testers, so what’s the first thing everyone does? Run benchmarks, of course. And what do they all tell us? Google’s new tablet is blazing fast; especially considering it’s saddled with last year’s top-of-the-line processor. It’s almost as fast as an HTC One for goodness sake.

Android Police ran GeekBench 2 on the Nexus 7 mark II to see how it faired against its predecessor and other Android phones and tablets. The result was pretty remarkable given its £200 price tag and Snapdragon S4 Pro rather than today’s top-spec Snapdragon 600 or 800.

The new Nexus 7 managed a very credible 2650 over all, which to put it in perspective is just 108 points behind the scorching HTC One. It’s also 545 points higher than the Nexus 4, which uses the same chip, and a massive 1,177 points higher than the previous generation Nexus 7 from 2012.

All in all, it looks like the new Nexus 7 is quite a step up in terms of raw horsepower, which combined with that 1080p screen, a slimmer waistline, and an LTE version, makes it really quite a bargain if you ask me. Specs don’t mean everything of course, but with pure Google on-board, I can only see this thing being super slick. I want one, that’s for sure.

If you want to geek out over even more benchmarking, hit Ars Technica’s rather thorough look at the new Nexus 7′s performance. [Android Police]
