Winners

Matt Walden, Filter Shots

I was hanging out with friends at observatory hill, thinking about all the filter options I could use. As I was framing up the scene as a photo it hit me, use an optical filter to do what the software filters are meant to do – focus the viewers attention to the subject. I used a polarising filter held out from the camera, along with a Canon 600D and 18-55mm lens. f/11 and 1/100 shutter speed. I did some tweaking in lightroom in terms of brightness, but wanted to make sure I maintain that base colour boost the filter brings. Here’s to sunny days with good mates!

Michael Chong, Cloud Shots

I was with a new group of photographers who were getting ready to take photos of a fire twirler doing his craft under the full moon on the beach. But once the sun went down and the action began it seems odd that the fire twirler couldn’t catch the fire staff consistently. It suddenly became obvious that though the sun went down the moon had yet to rise. Once the fire twirler was exhausted of dropping the staff and intense commands from a group of photographers wanting poses, the moon began to rise above the horizon, through the clouds and created an almost surreal sight reminiscent of a sunrise with its brightness and orange tinge but still having sky dark and the stars glimmering.

Gethin Coles, Night Shots And Galaxies

My wife told me to go for a walk (“Bugger off”) because I was grumpy ( I had toothache, it wasn’t my fault), so I took my kit and headed off down the local board-walk. In the pitch black, with a torch on the fritz, hopping from rock to rock it would switch off mid leap. That added some excitement to the proceedings. Shot on nikon d800 14-24 lens, 30 sec and f2.8 @ iso 2500. This is 3 shots joined together in photoshop (merge to panorama). You can get away with a 30 second shot at 14mm, with longer lenses you get star trails.

Max Rozen, Macro Shots

I don’t actually own a modern lens capable of doing macro too well, so I remembered that my dad gave me this pair of lenses he bought just before leaving the USSR in the 80s. I just wanted to capture ridiculously precise machining on the Mir 2.8/37
Shot with a 10mm extension tube, attached to a Helios-44-2 2/58, shot at F16, 10 second exposure, ISO 100.
