The Samsung Galaxy Camera is an amazing piece of tech.
It’s a 16.3-megapixel camera wrapped around a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, complete with 1GB of RAM, a 4.8-inch touchscreen (1280×720), 8GB of built-in storage that expands via microSD card to 64GB, all running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It also takes a microSIM card for sharing all those photos and videos you take.
The worst thing about carting a digital camera around is having to plug the memory cards into your computer, select, edit and share the photos. Quite often, it’s all just too hard and you just don’t do it. The Galaxy Camera is about taking beautiful photos, editing them with great apps thanks to the Android platform, and sharing them in a couple of clicks on social media, via email or to your other friends in the photo.
It can automatically upload photos to Dropbox, Google+ or another cloud platform so you ensure that none of your memories are lost, and because it runs Android, you can run apps like Instagram and Facebook to post your photos straight to your social networks.

This Week’s Challenge: Macro!
Macro photography is the art of close-up photography. Beautiful focus at close range to expose the intricate detail, beauty and soul of the subject. That’s what we want from you this week: macros and close-ups.
The slogan we’ve got going for the Galaxy Camera is “get closer”. That’s your mission: to get closer to your subject and show us something beautiful. Last week’s challenge was about exposing the beauty of the vast universe, now we want you to find beauty in the tiniest of details.
Look closely at the things around you and think of how beautiful you can make an image if you really got close. The stems of a leaf, the detail of the human eye, the beauty inherent in focussing in on one grain of sand amongst the billions.
How Judging Works
- Over four weeks, we will hold four rounds — one per week. There will be one Galaxy Camera up for grabs each week.
- This time, we’re back to reader’s choice for the best entry!
- Entries for the Shooting Challenge — Galaxies and Night Shots will close at 10am AEST on Tuesday 21 May.
- Voting will open for the Galaxies and Night Shots at 11am AEST on Tuesday 21 May and close at 10am on Tuesday 28 May.
- “Macro” winners will be announced at 11am AEST on Tuesday May 28.
The Rules
- We have altered the terms and conditions [PDF] for the Shooting Challenge. Linking friends from your social networks to the Gizmodo voting page is encouraged, however, please be respectful and constructive if leaving a comment about a photo.
- The work must be your own.
- You must be respectful and constructive if leaving a comment
- Photos need to be taken the week of the contest (May 15-21). No portfolio shots please.
- EXIF info must be visible to us — check for it before you submit!
- Explain (briefly) the photography equipment, settings, technique and story behind the shot.
- Include your shooting summary (camera, lens, ISO, etc) in the body of the email along with a story of the shot in a few sentences.
- Entries must be submitted via the entry form below.
- Don’t forget to name your image attachment properly!
- Save your files as JPGs, and use a FirstnameLastnameMacro.jpg naming convention.
- Please ensure your image is at least 800px wide and no larger than 3MB.
- One submission per person.
- Don’t skip the story part because it’s often the most enjoyable part for us all beyond the great photos!
