Reuters: Google To Launch Second-Gen Nexus 7 In July

Reuters is suggesting in a report today that Google will launch a new version of its Nexus 7 tablet in July. It will bring with it a decent spec bump, if the rumours are to be believed.

Citing two “sources with knowledge of the new product”, Reuters claims that the new Nexus 7 will pack a higher resolution screen, thinner bezel, and swap out Nvidia’s Tegra 3 silicon in favour of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip. The decision to switch chips — a major blow to Nvidia if it’s true — was based on power consumption considerations, according to the sources.

The news wire also claims that Google hopes to ship a whopping eight million of the tablets in the second half of the year — which, if true, is a statement of serious intent and a massive gauntlet thrown down to both Amazon and Apple. The sources also suggest that the device would continue to be built by Taiwanese manufacturer Asustek.

It’s unclear where the second-gen tablet would fit into the Nexus range. However, Reuters’ sources suggest that it could either go on sale for $US200 with the current model’s price being slashed, or alternatively replace the existing tablet and sell for $US150.

As ever, a pinch of salt is obviously required alongside these rumours. But it’s certainly the case that Google would want to refresh its tablet range in the coming year, and these suggestions certainly sound plausible. We’ll have to wait and see. [Reuters]
