Disney Just Shut Down LucasArts

Disney Just Shut Down LucasArts

150 staff laid off and two stellar-looking games cancelled. This is it: Disney is closing LucasArts.

Kotaku reports this morning the mega-studio that acquired the Star Wars universe from George Lucas for many billions last year has started swinging the axe at various properties, starting with LucasArts.

The staff are now out of a gig and the Battlefield-esque, Star Wars: First Assault has been cancelled, along with the Blade Runner-esque, Star Wars 1313. Sources say it’s unlikely the properties will be licensed out to other studios.

To be honest, this has been coming for a while. Late last year, Disney ordered a hiring freeze at LucasArts and ordered hat no new announcements be made about the studio’s developments.

It’s pretty sad to think that we won’t see any more Star Wars games out of the legendary studio, which has been open since 1982. We’ve enjoyed such classics as X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, the Dark Forces games and even the very first Rebel Assault games.

Vale, LucasArts. [Kotaku]
