Why US Internet Access Is Slow And Expensive

US citizens pay more for internet access than those in many other countries — and also get worse connections for their cash. This video explains why.

Here, Bill Moyers interviews Susan Crawford — former special assistant to President Obama for science, technology and innovation, and author of Captive Audience: The Telecom Industry and Monopoly Power in the New Gilded Age. She knows what she's talking about.

During the interview, she explains how the US government has allowed media organisations to put profit ahead of public interest — through price hikes, rigged rules and stifling competition. As she explains, "the rich are getting gouged, the poor are very often left out, and this means that we're creating, yet again, two Americas, and deepening inequality through this communications inequality."

Watch it, pity your Amerifriends and thank the heavens we have a fibre network coming sooner rather than later. [Vimeo]

US citizens? Complaining about their internet?

    ...

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

A few check of US ISPs finds that they charge $30 per month or less for "unlimited" access. Comcast can provide a 105Mbps download speed. Times Warner can provide a 50Mbps download speed. AT&T can provide a 768Mbps download speed.

So the US has actually faster and much cheaper Internet access than Australia.

The world needs a faster internet with no data caps and for far cheaper.

I find this article relevant to our geographical location.

I love how on one hand we get, the government has allowed this to happen, but on the other that government should not regulate business. What a weird country.

NBN can't come fast enough. Watching things like this, fucking Americans don't know how good they have it. I just hope the next government doesn't fuck up the NBN.

You do know that Abbott Inc. is killing off the NBN as soon as he gets in power. Not my opinion, but his stated policy, restated a few days ago.

Love to know the reason for this. At this stage it will cost more to shut down than it will to finish, the only saving will be time. Maybe.

So if they are getting screwed then WTF is it that we are getting?????

screwed so hard that the scews have lost their threads?

If US internet is slow and expensive, what are we on? Dial Up?

Someone show this to Tony Abbott.

Actually a quick look at comcast shows 105Mbps for $199.95 /month... That is actually a rip off.

Dang, you're right. This page misrepresents pricing:
