ZTE Grand S Makes It Official: Everyone Will Make A Superphone This Year

The name ZTE doesn’t mean a lot to us. The Chinese company has only had a handful of phones make it to the West, and they’ve been on the low end. Now, suddenly, they’re going for broke with the Grand S.

On paper, this thing looks mighty appetising. It has a 5-inch 1920×1080 screen (1080p, 440PPI), like the Huawei Ascend D2 and Sony’s two new Xperia phones. It packs Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, but the Grand S is actually clocked at 1.7GHz, while the others are at 1.5GHz. Like the others it packs 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage and LTE radios.

The Grand S also has a 13MP camera in the back, like the Sonys and the Huawei, and it’s just 7.9mm thick, like the Xperia Z. It will come running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) out of the gates, and rumour has it that there’s a pretty big battery under the hood, though we don’t have the official numbers on that yet.

When you read through that comparison it almost seems ho-hum. Au contraire, this phone looks awesome. It’s just that we’ve been hit by a small flood of these monster-specced superphones in the last couple of days. And you know what? Bring it. I love seeing a company like ZTE burst onto the scene with a phone like this. Who knows, maybe they’ll be a household name in the U.S. by this time next year. That, of course, remains to be seen. We’ll have to see how the software performs, but it’s definitely a device we’re excited to get our hands on. It’ll be hitting China in Q1, and hopefully elsewhere around the world not longer afterwards. [ZTE]
