One of the key benefits of signing up to a phone contract is having your handset subsidised (and getting more generous data allowances). But if you can afford the upfront cost, buying your phone outright can provide flexibility and save you money over time. Which do you prefer?

A little help required here Giz readers.
I am about to to leave the dark ages and get my first ever smart phone ........ a little late to the party but I'm here now ...... almost. (not on Facebook either but one thing at a time) This purchase outright versus contract plan is making my head hurt. Years ago, I bought a phone for $29 and pre pay with Vodaphone $30 which will last me about 2 months. With all the plans and packages how the f*** am I supposed to know how much data I'll use? I really don't like paying for something I wont be using but if I'm on a contract I will either be locked into an overpriced service or one that won't be sufficient.
