Is Amazon Working On Some Sort Of ‘KindleCare’?

There’s been a (pretty shaky) rumour kicking around lately that Amazon might be trying its hand at a smartphone, and now there’s some circumstantial evidence that Amazon might be getting ready to push in another direction as well. According to GigaOM, Amazon might be getting into warranties.

The possibility of Amazon launching some sort of KindleCare all comes back to a recent trademark application for the word “Kindle”. Amazon’s aiming to secure the rights to that name when it comes to:

Maintenance, repair, updating and installation services for computer hardware, computer peripherals, computer networks and consumer electronic devices; consulting services in the field of physical maintenance of computer hardware, computer peripherals, computer networks and consumer electronic devices; technical support services, namely, troubleshooting in the nature of the repair of computer hardware.

Coincidentally enough, as GigaOM points out, this is extremely similar to the AppleCare trademark. Setting up some kind of warranty system would mesh with Amazon’s current strategy regarding Kindle hardware; Amazon doesn’t make money when you buy a Kindle, but when you use it. And soon, maybe when you break it.

It certainly makes sense for Amazon to do something like this at some point, but it makes even more sense for them to snatch up that trademark regardless of their immediate plans. If nothing else, we know they’re probably thinking about the possibility, we’ll just have to wait and see if anything happens at all. [GigaOM]
