Gizmodo Awards 2012: Camera Of The Year

This week we’re announcing the best tech of the year, and we’re about to announce the best camera of 2012. And the winner is…

Readers’ Choice:

Olympus OM-D EM-5

Olympus’ retro blast from the past romped home ahead of Canon’s 5D Mark III heavyweight thanks to its gorgeous design, infections charm and amazing quality. Congratulations to Olympus. The OM-D EM-5 nabbed 32 per cent of the vote.

Honourable Mentions:
Canon EOS 5D Mark III — 20 per cent
Nikon D800E — 8 per cent

Editor’s Choice

Lytro Light-Field Camera

The Lytro wins the Editor’s Choice for Camera Of The Year purely on an ingenuity basis. The images it produces aren’t stellar, but the camera’s build quality and the revolutionary idea of capturing the field of light in front of the lens to allow focussing after the fact is incredible.

We spoke to Lytro’s inventor after the camera was released to the market in Australia who showed us the sensor that powers the Lytro, and it’s small enough to be inside a mobile phone. This may very well be the future of mobile photography, and we’re on the ground floor.

Congratulations to Lytro on the win!

Honourable Mention:
Olympus OM-D EM-5
