The iPad Mini Is Coming October 23

Apple has just sent out its last round of invites for the year, and it's as official as it gets: The iPad Mini is coming next week. Go ahead and mark off October 23 on your calendars. It should be quite a show.

As the invite above indicates, the event will be held at 10am PST/1pm EST at the California centre in San Jose. If that comes as a surprise, it maybe shouldn't; the event date is just one of a slew of iPad Mini rumours that have burbled up these last few months. Given how on point this year's crop of iPhone 5 rumors turned out to be, it's safe to assume the tiny tablet is equally in our sights.

So what are we looking at next week? Here's the rundown: A 7.85-inch, not-quite-retina display powered by an A5 processor and 512MB of RAM, priced starting anywhere from $US250 to $US350, available in a week or two. It will probably come in both Wi-Fi and 3G versions, and will look like, well, a smaller iPad. We could also see a new 13-inch retina MacBook pro and Mac mini.

The small tablet is a brand new look for Apple, one that Steve Jobs famously dismissed but that market pressures have forced on the company. The Kindle Fire HD, the Nexus 7. People are buying these. And — even worse for Apple — they're good.

For what it's worth, Apple's announcement comes just an hour after several inside looks at Microsoft's Surface tablet were unleashed on the public, making this not a bad way to steal some headlines — and hype — from what might be its best full-sized tablet competition yet.

As always, we'll be covering next week's iPad Mini magic show live. Here's hoping there are still a few surprises left.

Surprise, surprise! I wonder if Apple can keep anything secret anymore...

It's not really anything exciting or revolutionary. But the cheaper price will definitely help Apple capture the student market and compete against Android.

Cheaper. Until you have to purchase authorised lightning connectors.

Compete against android? There is not tablet market but Apple. It holds 69% of the market with one product against the hundreds of Android products.

and your stats are based on what?...apple fanboy...

Currently holds 0% of the small form tablet.

Why keep it secret? I have something to sell you, but you don't know what it is.

I doubt that they even try too hard. They like the hype, rumours and theories about what its going to be or look like. They want us to know little bits so in the end we actually pay attention to see if we were right.

Honestly, they're running out of oomph. They're facing extremely tough competition with the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean. Which is why they're biting their tongue and actually moving to a smaller form factor to keep up.

Interesting the colour graphic is textured in a way that resembles sandpaper.

It actually reminds me of marketing from the early 2000s, or even the '90s for some reason.

im tellin ya, its a big ipod touch not a mini ipad

      Maybe a medium ipod touch?
The ipad now is already the big iPod :)

13" macbook pro retina would be nice. Typical Apple not bringing out the 13" and 15" models at the same time so they can force fanboys into buying the more expensive model. And I'd bet my left nut that the ipad mini won't be retina so they can bring that out on the iPad mini 2 and screw loyal customers all over again. Does apple think people are stupid? I guess so.
