Well look what Telstra just kicked out the door: a self-branded, 10.1-inch, 4G Android tablet that hits stores tomorrow. The $480 device runs Ice Cream Sandwich and is aimed at first-time tablet buyers like good old ‘tech-minded Australian families.’

The 10.1-inch touchscreen has a 1280×800 resolution, which, by my calculations, gives it around 149.45 pixels per inch (PPI). That’s better than the (non-Retina) iPad 2 if that matters to you. Everything is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and the 6900 mAh battery is rated for video playback of around 9 hours.
However, we’ll be very interested to see how the battery fares with heavy 4G use. As for speed and coverage: until we get some hands-on time, we can only look to our tests of Telstra’s only other 4G tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G. And as always, we recommend scanning over Telstra’s 4G coverage area map.
Other key specs on the Telstra 4G Tablet include 16GB of internal storage dual cameras: 2-megapixel for front side video chat, and 5-megapixel back camera if taking pictures with a big tablet is your cup of tea. Weight comes in at 670 grams.
Customers can purchase the Telstra 4G Tablet outright for $480 and team it with Telstra’s Pre-Paid Data+ Cap offer, which allows top up data as needed. A range of recharge options are available at [Telstra]
Stay tuned for a hands-on review in the days to come…
