Keep Windows 8 Tiles At Bay With RetroUI

If you don’t like the concept of Windows 8’s Metro (or whatever they’re calling it these days) UI style for whatever reason, there’s a way to get around it. RetroUI is a program that will take users directly to the Classic desktop after login, and even lock the new UI away completely.

There have been several ways to get around the new tiled interface in Windows 8, but Microsoft hasn’t been particularly keen about letting users avoid it.

RetroUI works on the RTM builds of Windows 8. It lets users set the classic interface as their primary desktop, along with the ability to pull up the new tiled UI whenever they want. A third setting lets you disable the whole thing — hot corners, charms, everything. But you have to be careful because it could leave you without a Start menu.

RetroUI offers a free trial period, after which a licence (for up to three personal computers) costs $US4.95. It’s available for businesses too, but at the slightly higher cost of $US9.95 per PC. It seems like a long way to go just to avoid the Metro UI, something like this may be your only option if you don’t want to painstakingly teach grandma how to use it. [RetroUI via Mashable]
