Inside Nokia Lumia 920’s Camera: New Floating Lens Tech, Less Of The PureView

Nokia’s Lumia 920 flagship Windows Phone looks promising, but the camera isn’t quite what everyone hoped it would be. Where as Nokia’s 808 PureView phone packed a massive 41-megapixel sensor and mostly served as a proof of concept for the PureView tech, the Lumia 920’s sensor is believed to only be eight megapixels, which Nokia says can capture 5-10 times more light that other sensors.

As Nokia pointed out yesterday, PureView is not one specific feature, but rather a broader concept that encompasses a variety of features. So the PureView tech in the Lumia 920 could be different to what we saw in the 41-megapixel PureView 808. In fact, this latest iteration of PureView seems to focus more on low-light performance, which could arguably be more useful and have a bigger impact on users.

The Lumia 920 also come equipped with what Nokia calls a “floating lens” — image stabilisation technology for photos and especially videos. Remember this teaser? This floating lens technology was what that was all about.
