A Modern Glass And Steel Rail House In The Heart Of The Netherlands

A Modern Glass And Steel Rail House In The Heart Of The Netherlands

Utrecht-based Zecc Architecten BV is the firm behind this gorgeous old railway cottage restoration in Santpoort-Noord, The Netherlands. The glass and steel home lies on the railway line between Amsterdam and IJmuiden, its original two-storey brick component a beautiful contrast to the sharp lines of the newer add-on.

High clerestory windows provide a lot of light for this underground master. Through a staircase, the occupants emerge through the living room and into the galley kitchen within the old cottage. A small loft bedroom resides above the kitchen in the arching gabled attic of the cottage. There is not a single angle in this house that doesn’t exude the personality of the old railway cottage.

The floor-to-ceiling glass frames highlight the earthy brick and wood materials, a stunning balance of old and new. [Inhabitat]
