F-35 Drops Its First Bomb Ever

This August 8, the F-35 has dropped its first bomb ever and I'm sure it won't be the last. Watch this Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter test aircraft completing its "first aerial weapons release," as the US Navy puts it.

The plane dropped a 1,000-pound GBU-32 Joint Direct Attack Munition from its internal weapons bay over an Atlantic test range. [US Navy]

You'd think they'd show the actual results of the bomb drop too, make it a little longer and more exciting? Even if it's a training bomb with no explosives, a 1,000lb chunk of metal hitting the earth makes a heck of a crater.

This would be just a simple dummy warhead being released from the aircraft to see if it hits any part of the aircraft upon release. They will be looking at things like clearance from aircraft, see if it is released cleanly and there is no malfunction and other things as well.

Still, it'd be nice if they strapped another camera near the drop site. Just for shits and giggles.

Your wish will come true soon enough when they test it's weapon systems. I would dare say you'll have some videos of it firing missiles, the guns, dropping more bombs and some fake dogfighting.

It probably fell into the water, much safer that way.
