Watch This: Atlantic City Boardwalk Is Transformed By Glorious Display Of Sound And Light

Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, yesterday, debuted Duality, a sound and light installation — commissioned by The Atlantic City Alliance as part of their effort to restore the city’s once-glorious reputation — that will be projected on the iconic building all summer long.

Duality is the work of the Montreal-based new media and entertainment studio Moment Factory, whose team of 75 has worked with everyone from Céline Dion, Madonna to Microsoft.

Twice every hour after nightfall, the hall’s facade comes alone, with an 8.5-minute show of projected 3D animation and an accompanying original soundtrack. Stones pulsate, arches crumble, and the structure seemingly evaporates in a spectacular display of light and sound, a “five-act tale of rebirth and renewal” in tribute to the colourful legacy of the legendary Boardwalk Hall.

The installation of the show includes 12 20,000 lumen video projectors, 65 RGB Luminar standing lights, 14 surround-sound speakers, and five low-frequency sub-woofers (all designed to withstand even the severest seaside elements).

“Normally, a permanent installation like this would take us a year to develop. We had four months, in this case … or three. It’s a blur,” the studio’s multimedia director, Nelson de Robles, told FastCo.Design. “This project was really different from anything we’ve ever done. We’re in a historical building, so we had to be very careful about attaching any equipment to the facade.” For this reason, everything is custom.
