This Could Be The 10-Inch BlackBerry PlayBook

Vietnamese tech forum Tinhte is showing off what could be RIM’s new 10-inch PlayBook. But while the hardware looks like it might almost be ready for launch — if it’s real — don’t expect to get your hands on one any time soon.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the tablet looks much like its smaller, 7-inch sibling, although it does appear to have a slightly different aspect ratio — something like 3:2 if the images are reliable. On the inside, images over at Tinhte suggest that it packs a 26.82Whr battery — similar to that of the iPad 2 — as well as a slot for a SIM card, suggesting it will be equipped for mobile internet access (4G is probably a reasonable bet).

It’s tough to discern much more from the pictures, but that probably doesn’t matter too much since it’s probably going to be a long time before it’s ready to ship to customers.

Why? Well, RIM is almost certainly going to wait for the new BB10 operating system to be ready before it launches a new tablet. While that’s probably a good thing in terms of the device’s performance, the fact that BB10 is taking an absolute age to get ready means that it will slow down the launch of the tablet, something that a leaked RIM roadmap confirms the company is all too aware of. If it’s real, this thing won’t see the light of day until well into 2013.

The PlayBook’s OS sank RIM’s fortunes once, and if it’s not careful it’s going to happen all over again. [Tinhte via The Verge]
