Did Scientists Finally Discover The Higgs Boson?

We’ve heard this clamouring before, but after years of experimenting and hypothesising, the UK Telegraph says that CERN — keepers of the Large Hadron Collider — will hold a press conference this week to confirm the existence of the Higgs boson particle, commonly referred to as the God Particle. It could be the biggest announcement/discovery in the history of physics.

The rumour suggests that scientists will announce a 4-sigma level discovery, meaning they’re 99.99-percent certain the Higgs boson exists.

The Higgs boson particle is thought to be an invisible entity surrounding all things that their interactions with particles is what gives them mass, thus holding atoms, matter, and ultimately the universe, together. Much of theoretical physics — especially as it pertains to our conception of the universe — is built around speculation that this particle exists. But we have yet to ever encounter it with any certainty.

Some say that if the Higgs boson is discovered, we’ll need to reevaluate and revise many theorems in the field of physics to reflect this significant discovery. But it’s possible we could be getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s first wait and see what CERN announces. [UK Telegraph]
