In response to Monday’s news that Apple had pulled 39 of its computers from EPEAT‘s green certification, Apple spokesperson Kristin Huguet today released the following statement to The Loop
“Apple takes a comprehensive approach to measuring our environmental impact and all of our products meet the strictest energy efficiency standards backed by the US government, Energy Star 5.2. We also lead the industry by reporting each product’s greenhouse gas emissions on our website, and Apple products are superior in other important environmental areas not measured by EPEAT, such as removal of toxic materials.”
On the one hand, EPEAT’s certifications are old and outmoded and do not apply to the full range of Apple’s wares (EPEAT does not certify smartphones or tablets) — on the other hand, because Apple is in the business of selling computers, this statement still doesn’t seem to change anything.
