If you think about it, pop-up and flip books are really early versions of the GIFs we’re all so smitten with today: brief, repetitive animations, often of a silly or naughty nature.
Maria Popova, of Brain Pickings, “a lover of unusual pop-up books and naughty Victoriana,” had the genius idea and matching skill to turn a sampling of pages from The Naughty Nineties: A Saucy Pop-Up Book for Adults Only into their modern counterparts. The result: a hands-free pop-up book experience, with all the charm of pen-and-ink illustration and all the playfulness of the day’s most circulated GIF.
