If your attempts at art usually end up looking more at home on the fridge than a fine gallery, you might want to see if artists Kyle McDonald and Matt Mets will let you use their wonderful Self-Portrait machine which doesn’t require a lick of talent.
In fact, you don’t even need to keep your eyes open to sketch a recognisable facsimile of your own face. The machine does everything for you — except hold the pen, so you can still feel like you’re a part of the process. It’s built from a cannibalised Thing-O-Matic 3D printer connected to a camera-equipped laptop running custom software that converts photos of your face into a line drawing.
Once the conversion process is complete, all you need to do is rest your forearm on a moving platform and hold a pen incredibly still while the machine goes through the motions. When it’s done, you’re left with a self-portrait that leans more towards the abstract side of the art world but is still suitable for framing and hanging on the wall.
