Rugged Android Tablet Redefines Tonka-Tough… And Ugly

Designed to be used by those who are actively getting shot at in warzones, not just those of us who are clumsy with our gadgets, the new Rampage 6 tablet is even more rugged than Panasonic’s Toughbook tablet. Though, far less capable.

The Rampage 6, from Juniper Systems and SDG Systems, has an IP67 protection rating for dust and water, compared to just an IP65 rating on Panasonic’s gear. It can also survive 1.2m drops directly onto concrete, being completely submerged under water and toasty temperatures up to 50C. In other words, you’re probably not going to find a more reliable way to play Angry Birds in severe conditions.

Unfortunately, all that protection is like putting a suit of armour on a mouldy turd. Under the hood, the Rampage 6 is running a custom version of Android 2.3 powered by an 806MHz processor, 256MB of ram and 4GB of on-board storage expandable via an SD card slot. It’s also got GPS capabilities, various ports including USB, and the standard wireless connectivity options you’d expect to find on any Android device. Which all sounds pretty ho-hum to us, but then again, we don’t have to show up to work wearing flak jackets. [GISuser via Ubergizmo]
