At first glance, artist Ryosuke Fukusada’s wooden lightbulb looks like it was simply carved from a solid block of wood and meant to hang from a ceiling as an art piece. But it actually works — without it going up in flames.
That’s because the bulb wasn’t created from a solid block of timber. Instead, it’s an LED bulb covered in an incredibly thin wooden shell that still lets the light shine through. So it creates a lovely glowing woodgrain effect when the lights are off, with minimal risk of a catastrophic fire given how little heat LEDs produce. Now Fukusada just needs to convince GE or Sylvania that wooden bulbs are the future of lighting so we can all actually buy them.
