All Furniture Should Double As Optical Illusions

All Furniture Should Double As Optical Illusions

Who doesn’t love things with a twist? Mystery novels. Sweetbreads. Soylent Green. All very great. Charles Kalpakian’s Cinétisme wall shelves are no exception, which, at first glance, appear to be nothing more than wall panels with an isometric 3D design.

But these shelves aren’t just pretending to be 3D. They are fully-functioning objects which might exist solely to screw with your head. Kalpakian designed the pieces around the concept of bistability, which is definined as something resting in two states at once (in this case, the shelf and its perspective). When combined en masse, the shelves also resemble something from a Saul Bass title sequence, with is wonderful in and of itself.
