What Happened With The NBN This Week?

NBN Co got accused of trying to slip in advertorial content, the first “virtual” NBN-based ISP was announced and regional areas got to grips with the realities of the NBN rollout in this week’s NBN news.

• So far what we’ve seen in terms of NBN plans has been via the established ISPs that everyone deals with, but this week saw the emergence of the first new NBN-only ISP, AusBBS, which will be the first “virtual” ISP in the country, with all functions outsourced. [Computerworld]

• As the NBN rollout gets underway, the issues of dealing with local councils begin to emerge. This week in Ballarat, the placement of a tower was debated in local council, with residents raising health and visual beauty issues. [The Courier]

• Staying within a regional perspective, Toowomba has an upcoming NBN information session on May 5th. [The Chronicle]

• To educate, or to advertise? It’s a thorny issue, and one that Liberal MP Paul Fletcher isn’t happy with, lodging a complaint with the Australian Press Council over material that ran in The Sydney Morning Herald and elsewhere this week. In one of life’s little ironies, the material was sponsored by Optus — Fletcher’s former employer. [SMH]
