Artist Brings Real Clouds Into Rooms

A cloud suspends itself in the middle of a room. It’s not the work of witchcraft or Photoshop — it’s the work of a Dutch artist.

Berndnaut Smilde is an installation artist who has merged art and science to create real clouds indoors. Using a fog machine and regulating the humidity and room temperature, Smilde creates the clouds, which hover in the air for only a few seconds before dissipating.

The combination of a simple smoke machine, indoor moisture and dramatic lighting allows Smilde to capture the clouds in photographs.
