Nobody yet — there’s no movie plans — but not one to let a profitable IP lie, DC has announced a series of Watchmen “Prequel” comics.
The timing on this strikes me as really odd — if you were going to do a simple cash-in, wouldn’t it have made more sense to do so a few years ago when the movie was hot?
Nonetheless, DC’s ploughing ahead with no fewer than seven different mini-series that (presumably) will examine in exhaustive detail every single blot on Rorschach’s face, as well as why Dr Manhattan has that curious aversion to pants. If those sell, given Hollywood’s general happiness to run ideas into the ground and then several kilometres lower, can movie prequels be far away?

There’s really no need for these prequel comics, and I personally think that Watchmen is better without back stories.

Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 12:08 PMThe thing is, the Watchmen comic already *has* backstories. Along with the main storyline in every issue there was extensive backstory detailing the origins and speculating on the motives of all the main cast.

Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 11:56 AMYeah agree with cracks it seemed unnecessary if it follows the main characters, maybe if it was about some of the lesser characters perhaps?

Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 12:13 PMThe accumulated filth of all their prequels and back stories will foam up about their covers and all the issues and collected paperbacks will look up and shout “Buy us!”… and I’ll look down and whisper “No.”
