Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 1:30 PMSo..The iPad 3. Think I’ll be buying one. 2048×1536 screen will look amazing for 1080p vids, 2D games and apps, reading, web surfing and general OS navigation. No way most 3D games will run natively at that res though so I think they’ll be up-scaled 1:4 from 1024×768.. Should still look excellent given the even pixel ratio and lack of pixel visibility.
Anyway, combined with a probable quad core CPU, twice the ram, hugely improved graphics (you’d want to hope so anyway to drive that many pixels!) Siri and improved cameras (don’t care much about Siri or tablet cameras, but I’ll view them as added bonuses) it’ll probably be an instant purchase for me, unless there are any technical or production problems that present themselves.
Even more amazing than a 2048×1536 screen, is the fact that there are actually people arguing that you won’t be able to see the difference from the current iPad2 screen! I hate the acronym LOL, but in this case LOL LOL! Why is 4 x the pixel density so hard for people to get their head around as a giant improvement and technical achievement? Cracks me up!

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 2:35 PMI’ll be checking it out myself (undecided if I’ll get that or one of the upcoming quad-core Android tablets). But weight is most important to me as I like to read in bed and waking up with after dozing off with a tablet smacking you in the nose sucks ;)

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 9:19 AMafter owning an ipad first, *then* getting an iphone with retina display, 1024×768 is ruined for me now :P
To be honest though, I don’t think movies or games is where you’d see it. A 1080 movie will look great on a screen that small regardless of resolution. And you’re not looking at the smooth edges of something in a game, usually.
It’s text that’ll be beautiful on it. Text and UI.
The idea of people saying you won’t notice – yes I agree, what a load. I feel that from this point onwards Apple is likely to go ultra hi res for basically everything, and hopefully others will follow suit. Pixels (theoretically) invisible to the naked eye should be standard :)

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 6:09 AMOK, this one may come back to bite me in the bum, but….
What do you want to see more of on Gizmodo Australia? Here’s your chance; an open mike, a blank sheet of paper — choose whatever metaphor you like. I’m more talking Australian content — you know, all those articles with the little flag next to them — and I’m far more interested in constructive commentary than simply the same old (“you’re so biased towards/against insert-your-choice-of-product-here” or “try sucking less” kind of trolling).
So go. Do your worst. Or hopefully your best. I’m watching.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 7:57 AMHi Alex,
I would like to suggest something although I don’t know if other people will agree. I would love to see, occassionally, stuff on models. You know, the kind you get from a hobby shop that you build from scratch. (NOT WARHAMMER) Would be good to inspire people to do something productive rather than spend a lot of money on gadgets we’ll use once. (Which I do too often).
On another note there is one thing I would like to see less of. The stupid “check out this $25,000 watch that you can’t afford, does nothing more than tell the time and makes you feel even poorer”. IMHO

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 12:01 PMMaybe some more themed weeks.
For example a week with stories about sporting related technology, like how the hawkeye technology works, or the technology behind an F1 car
An Australian Scientist week, interviews with people that are doing awesome/interesting research
Some of the recent NASA articles have been interesting, so maybe some stories about Australian contributions to space exploration

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 2:16 PMOK, I’ll bite. I was going to say “I’m pretty happy with the unique Australian content” (and I am) – but I just had a novel thought.
I’ve actively read Gizmodo on a daily basis for about 18 months now, and in that in that time it’s been pretty clear Gizmodo don’t mind publishing pieces which don’t exactly fit under the “technology news” umbrella. Some of the best and most engaging stories I’ve read on Gizmodo haven’t been gadget related, hell even technology related sometimes. Maybe it was attributed to the author writing about something they’re passionate about privately when they’re not wearing their “Gizmodo writer’s hat”, who knows.
While technology these days is engaging, Giz aren’t really able to report too much that CNet, Engadget or any of the other major tech sites report on. Technology news is 90% phones and tablets these days, and of that is about the half dozen models Apple has on the (future) market.
Just a thought here – Giz already have a few periodic regular articles; this is one of them, along with the photography challenge, daily lunchtime deals, etc – how about a weekly “Writer’s choice”?
I’d love to see a weekly piece from either of the Kidmans, Danny, Elly or Logan writing about whatever the hell is on their mind at the time. I don’t really care what style of journalism it is – whether it’s an opinion piece, a review of something non-tech related, or a fiction piece; but I’d love to see some unique content about the stuff that YOU guys are interested in. It might not result in stories that immediately appeal to all of the reader base, but at least it’d be an opportunity gauge reader reactions on stuff left of field.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 3:25 PMThis is a great idea. I think it would make for some interesting articles.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 3:55 PMThe other advantage to this is that it would negate the people complaining ‘WHATS THIS GOT TO DO WITH TECH’.
Brilliant idea.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 10:35 AMHmm, yeah model aeroplanes or whatever aside, I regularly cruise other tech sites (sorry bout that, but Giz is always my first :) and it seems to me there could be a broader spectrum of tech, i.e, stuff that effects the world rather than mostly personal stuff like the, dare I say it! iPhone/pad. Also on a page build note, the comments section, could use a larger font whilst typing into the box, currently it’s kinda small and the reply feature could use a bit of TLC too. just sayin :)

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 3:05 PMThe comments section needs taking out the back and shooting. It has done for a long time. It really is the biggest let down for the Allure reader community.
Something like Disqus where readers can make posts with either their own account (or log in using Facebook, twitter, etc) and keep a track of their comments would do the site a world of good.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 3:56 PMfully agreed, the commenting system – while neat and tidy, I guess – is just not cutting it these days. I don’t know about disqus tho… I always find it slow and annoying. But it would be better, true.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 9:13 PMI love the Aussie content here on GizAU. Same goes for KotakuAU.
Perhaps more local guest writers from a more specialised point of view would enrich the content though? Today’s piece by Carlo Kopp is a great example of what I mean.
Also I would love to see more done to foster and grow the GizAU community (what there is of it). Things such as reader reviews, comment/thread of the week (and even basic improvements to the comments system such as notification of replies to comments and maybe PMs) would all go a long way toward this.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 9:19 PMForgot to add – I also check in to GizUK every week to read Matt Delito’s weekly feature Notes From the Front Line. Not at all tech related, but a fascinating read every week.
Perhaps some “Day in the Life of…” type articles too.

2 things stood out. in the unlikely chance that Rudd succeeds, wouldn’t it be great if he booted this monkey too.
secondly, this quote from the great rock- ape -
“The Howard Government weakened our existing laws, we’ve seen already a concentration and without a public interest test, simply relying on the ACCC will not deliver you a diversity of opinion, a diversity of voices.”
clearly you need a diversity of voices … and then ignore all of them…

Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 10:44 AMFor any of those who have the Transformer TF101, ICS is now being delivered to your device once you turn it on. Got mine this morning, not a huge change, but the interface is a lot sharper and there are some tweaks to the way it uses the battery. Plus a couple of new apps. Looks and feels sharper. :)
