Anonymous Records Entire FBI Conference Call

Usually the FBI is the one doing the wiretapping, but Anonymous has turned the tables on the feds, intercepting an entire phone conversation between US and UK police. The investigation? Anonymous and LulzSec. Irony!

The cops talk elite arrested members of the hacking squads, referring to their “Project Mayhem or whatever the hell that was” and dismissing the kids as attention-seeking idiots. And yet the police struggle to explain what Steam is to each other, and mix up which suspect is using which online moniker, so perhaps they’re not the most internet-savvy bunch for the job.

Anonymous has bleeped out the real names of their members, but otherwise the recording is perfectly ripped. How’d they do it? We don’t know — whether the FBI recorded the call and the file was nabbed, or the conversation was surreptitiously recorded as it happened is unclear, but it looks like the latter might have been the case.

Anon posted an FBI email organising the “Anon-Lulz International Coordination Call,” complete with dial-in number and password. This is an enormous black eye for the governments that are supposed to be pulling the noose around online crime and it’ll sure be hard to police the internet when you can’t even keep hackers off of your phone line. One thing that struck me, listening to this recorded conversation, is how similar the FBI’s conference calls are to any other large organisation’s:
    — People turning up late
    — No security areound account numbers/PINs (these are almost never changed, even once contracts expire or people leave).
    — Double-booked conference rooms
    — Inane chatter about pointless crap
    — Only about 50% of the time devoted to actual work.

I’m pretty sure the confernce system in use there (judging from the prompts and tones) allows real-time viewing of who has joined, preceisely to prevent this kind of abuse. So, these guys are looking after the free-world then huh?

lulz dialled into the bridge – you can hear the two “pings” which means they where lurking and joined with one other guest. The admin should have followed protocol and asked all joiners to identify themselves immediately, dill! You can hear him say “I don’t know if we are the only two people on the bridge”.
