US Tablet Ownership Doubled Over The Holidays

Compared to 10 per cent in mid-December, over 19 per cent of US adults now own a tablet, according to Pew. There was an identical trend with ereaders, too, and there’s not as much overlap as you might expectr: 29 per cent own one or the other. That is a lot of new iPads and Kindles. I’m just waiting for the next Star Trek convention when we’ll see some serious mods made to all the tablets come out :)

The lack of overlap is not surprising. Tablets do so little that if you already have an eReader, it is going to be hard to justify a second purchase. I can imagine someone buying a tablet to replace an eReader but not so they can have both.

I was surprised to see so many iPads on the American Airlines flight I got from LA to Hawaii last month. There must have been 20 or more people reading and watching video on them. My brother and I were the only two people I saw with eReaders. By contrast, on the Jetstar flight home, the only tablets I saw were the ones they will rent you for in-flight entertainment but there were were a few other passengers with Kindles.
