Books are wonderful, wonderful things. I love my Kindle, I really do. But this video makes me realise just how much I love the hard copy: the crack of a spine, the smell of the paper, the turn of the page. My Kindle doesn’t do those things: it just runs out of battery.
OK, so maybe I’m being a touch romantic, but this wonderful video by YouTuber crazedadman is stunning. According to his YouTube page, crazedadman spent “many sleepless nights moving, stacking and animating books at Type bookstore in Toronto” with his wife. I’m glad he did. Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 8:52 PMI love my Kindle but I suspect that it, and the ecosystem it relies on, will not be around 50 or maybe even 20 years from now.
Meanwhile, I enjoy paperback sci-fi novels written in the late `50s, and my Dad collects old textbooks from 150+ years ago. Even apart from the tactile and vivid nature of books (comic books, picture books, textbooks and reference manuals), they are durable artifacts that record their history just by being around.

Friday, January 13, 2012 at 5:36 PMIt’s disappointing to see the decline of hard copy but it’s inevitable. We had concreters around our place doing the driveway and using bolt cutters to cut the reinforcing mesh. I jokingly said that I was surprised they weren’t using some sort of cordless bolt cutter. The guy looked at me and said, it is. Touche. Maybe we should ask ourselves if we really need eBooks….they never need charging and will outlive an eBook reader many times over.
